The International Health Initiative of the University of Alberta Medical School allows students in any of the four years
of medical training to take part in electives overseas. All international electives have been categorized and placed into a database for
easy access. You can perform a search for an elective, using the form below, based on the region/continent in which the elective
shall be taken, or based on the specific discipline under which the elective is classified.

Am. Council for Voluntary International Action is a consortium of 150+ non-profit organizations working
worldwide in the health, educational, development and other related fields, and is a source of jobs and
volunteer resources. The site includes hotlinks to all of its members.
Am. Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene provides listings of overseas opportunities and much other
information. The Am. J. of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene provides an extensive listing of overseas
opportunities at approximately three-year intervals.
Canadian Network for International Surgery promotes the delivery of essential surgical care to the
underprivileged. As an educational and research agency, it conducts workshops in essential surgical
skills and programs in injury prevention in African countries.
Doctors Without Borders USA is the famous French-originated organization that sends fully qualified health
professionals into some of the most challenging parts of the world.
FUNEDESIN (Foundation for Integrated Education and Development) Clinical Rotation Program provides clinical
experiences in the Amazon Region of Ecuador. It is open to all levels of students and health professionals
in the fields of Medicine and Nursing. Further information can be found on the website. The application pack

International Alliance in Service and Education (IASE) offers a Service Learning Program in Tetecala, Mexico
(a rural village in the state of Morelos). The program is open to students in health related majors at the
undergraduate and graduate level, and offers health and education services to the underserved population of
Tetecala and its surrounding hamlets.
International Emergency Medicine Rotations Database, operated by the Boston University School of Medicine,
this site provides information about rotations in emergency medicine in all regions of the world.
International Healthcare Opportunities Clearinghouse provides listings of organizations with internet links,
of on-line resources, courses, and books on IH, and information about how to get funding. It has a search
engine that can locate organizations according to diverse search criteria and provides links to home pages of
organizations where available.
International Health Medical Education Consortium [IHMEC] provides information about courses, curricula,
annotated websites, foreign language study courses, and other materials useful for faculty and students interested

International Medical Corps is a private, nonsectarian, nonpolitical, humanitarian relief organization established
in 1984 by volunteer US physicians and nurses. The home page lists IMC’s programs and job openings for doctors,
nurses and other health professionals.
